Malaysia: Cameron Highlands
Though not quite as wild as the Borneo half of the country, Peninsular Malaysia has a number of interesting options for day-hikes dotted between all the big cities. One of the most popular of these areas is the old British hill station known as the Cameron Highlands.

The area isn’t terribly suitable for more than a few days on the trail, but there are myriad options for day-hikes from the main settlement at Tanah Rata.
There really are three choices for day-hikes here, though strong hikers can easily combine all three in one day. Do you want to walk through manicured tea plantations, hike up a small mountain, or wander around in overgrown jungle?
For a relaxing walk with the occasional stop for a warm drink, the tea plantations are the obvious choice.
For something a bit more strenuous but still very meditative, the muddy jungle trails are nice. Really, take any trail out of Tanah Rata and you’ll walk this for a bit.

No matter where you walk, most hikers with a reasonable trail competency shouldn’t need a guide. Paths are pretty well signed and it takes some effort to get more than a few miles away from one of the settlements. If you really feel like you need a guide or are short on time and visiting from Kuala Lumpur, check out this option. If you do decide to dayhike from Tanah Rata, note that dorms start for under $10 and luxury hotels from the $100’s.
